Quantities

IFC Quantity Takeoff

Measure distances, polylines, areas and model faces; count and aggregate selected IFC objects; derive validated surface and closed-mesh volume results; and combine IFC, geometry, manual and count evidence in one exportable takeoff basket.

Measure, select and build takeoffs directly from the IFC model in the interactive IFC Viewer workspace.

The workflow

A practical route
through the information.

  1. 01
Open an IFC model and measure real model points, edges or faces, or select one or more objects.
  2. 02
Add IFC quantities, counts, surface areas, validated volumes and material groups to the takeoff basket with visible provenance.
  3. 03
Review unavailable or open-mesh contributors, then export the mixed takeoff as CSV.

Interactive IFC measurement and auditable object, material and geometry quantity takeoff.

Measure directly in the model

Use vertex, edge and face snapping in the existing 3D viewer to measure point-to-point distance, multi-segment polylines, coplanar polygon areas and selected face areas. Measurement annotations remain in model context while you build the takeoff.

The workflow uses the model already open in IFC Viewer. It does not upload or parse a second copy just to start a takeoff.

Combine objects, materials and geometry

Select one or more IFC objects for counts, available IFC quantity records, tessellated surface areas and validated closed-mesh volumes. Material takeoff groups contributors by IFC material identity and reports unavailable contributors instead of inventing values.

Each basket entry retains its model source, object identity, quantity, unit and provenance: IFC, GEOMETRY, MANUAL or COUNT.

Export evidence, not just totals

Build a mixed takeoff basket from measurements and selected objects, then export it as CSV for review. Open or non-manifold meshes are rejected for volume, and missing quantities stay explicit so source-model limitations remain visible.

Quantity results still depend on model quality, units and modelling conventions. IFC Viewer supports review and evidence; it does not guarantee estimating accuracy independent of the source model.

Tool questions

Common review questions.

Can I measure distances and areas in the 3D IFC model?

Yes. The Quantity Takeoff Pro Tool supports snapped distance, polyline, polygon-area and model-face measurements in the active 3D viewer.

How are model volumes handled?

Volume is calculated only from closed, manifold and consistently oriented tessellated geometry. Open or invalid meshes are reported as unavailable rather than assigned a guessed volume.

Can I combine measured and model-derived quantities?

Yes. The takeoff basket can combine IFC records, geometry-derived results, manual measurements and counts, with provenance preserved in the CSV export.

What should I check before trusting a total?

Check the model source, units, selected contributors, property coverage, geometry-validation result and any unavailable-contributor warnings shown with the entry.
